Pentecost 19C
Luke 18:1-8

In this week’s Gospel Jesus tells the parable of the widow and the unjust judge, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. 3 In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, “Grant me justice against my opponent.’ 4 For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, “Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ “

She was a woman in patriarchal society and thus severely restricted.  She was a widow, alone in the world, without a male advocate to represent her in her legal issues.  She was most likely poor without the favor that money can buy.  And the judge is unjust, confessing that he has no respect for anyone, no one, let alone this woman.  Her situation seems hopeless; she is in a battle with “the way things are,” the principalities and powers of this world.  Yet she does have something, she has a profound faith that keeps her going, even in the face of the overwhelming odds.  And in the end her faith inspired persistence and courage is finally rewarded, in the end justice is finally done.

As we seek out the Kingdom of God, Jesus exhorts us to not lose heart, to continue to pray, and to be persistent.  In his “I Have A Dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr. answered the question as to how long African Americans might have to wait for equality and justice with these beautiful and faith-filled words, “I am convinced that we shall overcome because the arc of the universe is long but it bends toward justice.”

Let those who have eyes, see.  Let those who have ears, hear.

      1. Eyes For The Sky

Everybody’s walking with their eyes to the ground;
Everybody’s feeling so low
Nobody’s got a reason to live;
Ain’t got no place to go

But baby you and I are different than that
We got something that shines
Baby you and I are different than that
We got eyes for the sky

Everybody’s talking ’bout gravity;
No one believes they can fly
Stuck on the ground, a built in excuse;
Nobody even tries

But baby you and I are different than that
We got something that shines
Baby you and I are different than that
We got eyes for the sky

And when I hold you and you hold me
There is a moment and I believe

Everybody’s doing the same old thing;
Everybody’s towing the line
Ain’t got a vision for tomorrow;
Safe and secure they survive

But baby you and I are different than that
We got something that shines
Baby you and I are different than that
We got eyes for the sky

Everybody’s got something nasty to say;
About someone else or some place;
Confused by fear and the face in the mirror;
Just another fall from grace

But baby you and I are different than that
We got something that shines
Baby you and I are different than that
We got eyes for the sky

And when I hold you and you hold me
The sweetest moment and I believe

But baby you and I are different than that
We got something that shines
Baby you and I are different than that
We got eyes for the sky
