July 26, 2020 + Pentecost 8A + Romans 8:26-39

In this week’s appointed epistle from the book of Romans St. Paul writes confidently, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is one of my favorite pieces of scripture; it reminds me that I am loved deeply and completely in Christ Jesus.  It boldly promises that nothing can ever come between God and me.  Absolutely nothing!  However, there are times in my life when I feel disconnected with God, there are times when I don’t understand the relationship, there are times when I am convinced that I am completely alone in the universe.

The great reformer Martin Luther often felt the same way. In the midst of life’s struggles and temptations he was often devastated by doubt and even despair as he struggled to understand the nature of God’s love. There were days when, try as he might, he was not able to experience God’s benevolent presence in his life. Legend has it that one day Luther took a knife and carved the words, “I am baptized,” into his desk. He needed a daily external reminder of God’s love, something that would be present when he did not understand or could not feel the good news of the Gospel. Those words, carved into his desk, gave him comfort and reminded him that no matter how he felt on any particular day and that no matter what he understood in any particular moment, ultimately he was a beloved child of God. This simple truth, this daily reminder, sustained him throughout his, often turbulent, life.

Perhaps we all need to find a place in which to “carve” this promise as a daily reminder that we are loved by God and that “nothing” can separate us from that love, absolutely nothing!

“Fall On You Like Rain”

“Fall On You Like Rain”

I will wipe away your tears, I will hold you in your pain
I will give up all my glory,  I will fall on you like rain
From heaven, a gentle rain

I will be there where you are, I will cross the great divide
I will take you where I’m going, I will never leave your side
In heaven, we’ll abide

Nothin’ in all of heaven and earth could ever come between
The beginning and the end I’m in you and you are in me

I will wipe away your tears, I will hold you in your pain
I will give up all my glory,  I will fall on you like rain
From heaven, a gentle rain

I will be there when you’re lonely, I will be there when you’re scared
I will surround you when you feel, like no one’s there
With heaven, to share

Nothin’ in all of heaven and earth could ever come between
The beginning and the end I’m in you and you are in me

I will wipe away your tears, I will hold you in your pain
I will give up all my glory,  I will fall on you like rain
From heaven, a gentle rain

And a new song, a sweet song, will find you where you are …
I will fall on you like rain
