Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.  The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)

In this week’s epistle reading St. Paul reminds us that it’s all about love.  All the commandments are summed up in love because love always does the right thing.  As the Beatle’s reminded us, “All you need is love.”  Yet it’s not that easy.

It’s not easy because many of us have never experienced true love.  We have experienced shades of love, incomplete love, and distorted love, but seldom have we come across “holy love.”  The origin of the word “holy” comes from the Old English word for “whole.”  Incomplete love abounds.  We confuse love with sex, we confuse love with narcissism, we confuse love with commercialism, we confuse love with codependency, we even confuse love with hate.

This week’s song, “Sweet Holy Love,” invites us to engage a “whole” love.  Love grounded in the unconditional grace and the unqualified passion that God has for each of us.  The story of Jesus, the story of God’s love for us, is a story that takes place in the ordinary places where we live, yet it is filled with the extraordinary and complete love of God.  God has chosen to come to us that we might know, believe, and experience a true and “whole,” holy love.

Sweet Holy Love + Greg Ronning

Sweet Holy Love

It’s not easy, day after day
It’s not easy, finding the way
I don’t know, I look to you

Sweet Holy Love, deep inside
Paint the pictures of my life
Sweet Holy Love, set me free
Hold me closer till I believe
Sweet Holy Love

In my head, cut off from the heart;
In my head, I struggle with my part
I don’t know, I look to you

Sweet Holy Love, deep inside
Paint the pictures of my life
Sweet Holy Love, set me free
Hold me closer till I believe
Sweet Holy Love

Black and White, I can play the game;
Black and White, I forget my name
I don’t know, I look to you

Sweet Holy Love, deep inside
Paint the pictures of my life
Sweet Holy Love, set me free
Hold me closer till I believe
Sweet Holy Love

Icons of love, heavenly glory;
Icons of love, I step into the story
Now I know, I am with you

Sweet Holy Love, deep inside;
Painting the pictures of my life
Sweet Holy Love, I am free;
Holding you close, I believe
Sweet Holy Love
