 “Risk to be Free”

“As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him.”

When Jesus calls out to the fisherman they are holding onto their nets, their identity, their source of income, their heritage, their inheritance, their way of life, and perhaps their very life.  I am always amazed that they were able to “let go” and follow Jesus.

It’s been said that the best way to catch a wild monkey is to put a banana in a heavy jar, a jar with an opening just big enough to squeeze your hand through.  I guess Monkeys are very reluctant to let go, so when they reach into the jar and grab the banana they become trapped.  With fist clenched around the banana their hands cannot get back out of the jar.  And so they are easily caught.  They just can’t let go, even if it means freedom.

I wonder what things we might be holding onto that keep us from being free?  What things are we holding onto that keep us from living out our great calling in life?  What things are we holding onto that keep us from following Jesus?  And do we dare let go, let go of those things, so that we might instead grab hold of Christ?

 “Risk to be Free”

Too many covered hearts beat unaware
Too many empty eyes possessed by vacant stares

Is this your life? Never ending hesitation?
Is this your life? Your final destination?

Grab hold of me
Take the leap of faith that will set you free
Grab hold of me
Risk to be free
Risk to be free

Too many timid souls merge into the crowd
Too many broken bodies never cry out loud

Is this your life? Never ending hesitation?
Is this your life? Your final destination?

Grab hold of me
Take the leap of faith that will set you free
Grab hold of me
Risk to be free
Risk to be free

Too many strong arms never hold body heat
Too many weak stomachs never hit the street

Is this your life? Never ending hesitation?
Is this your life? Your final destination?

Grab hold of me
Take the leap of faith that will set you free
Grab hold of me
Risk to be free
Risk to be free

As Jesus calls out to you, what are you holding?

And what might you want to let go?

Risk to be free!

Mark 1:14-20

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
